From Praise to Rage: Right-wing Response to Jeffrey Epstein File Disclosure is Divided.

Right-leaning reactions to the limited disclosure of documents involving the Epstein case have been sharply divided, with some backers of the former Trump administration highlighting the prominent appearance of Bill Clinton and other Democratic figures in photographs, while others expressed frustration over how extensive redactions portray Donald Trump and GOP members in a unfavorable light.

Justice Department Justifies Redactions with Fervent Hyperbole

Justice Department officials justified the redactions with fervent hyperbole. “At no point in U.S. the nation's history has a President or the Justice Department been this open with the public about such a sensitive law enforcement issue,” declared a senior Justice official Todd Blanche, who issued a detailed memo describing the censorship process.

Concerns Prompted by Blacked-Out Sections

While Trump's identity and likeness appear in some of the materials, the extensive redactions prompt significant concerns about what may be concealed behind them. A number of conservative lawmakers swiftly demanded greater transparency.

“The public are raging and disengaging,” posted Republican Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene.

Via a social media post, GOP Kentucky Thomas Massie said the censorship violate the statute, and suggested that a subsequent legislature may attempt to remove the top law enforcement official, Pam Bondi, for that violation. “Regrettably, this file dump grossly fails to adhere to both the intent and the wording of the law,” he added.

A Faction of Conservative Figures Swing In Support of the Release

But, some conservative pundits and Trump loyalists swung firmly in support of the Justice Department's actions.

The release—originating from a justice department led by close Trump associate Pam Bondi—includes hundreds of documents that are completely censored, and many of the individuals depicted in photographs have their faces obscured.

But a few do not, including prominent individuals like Clinton, entertainer Michael Jackson, and scholar Noam Chomsky. The presence of the former president, especially, allowed certain conservative voices to go on the offensive.

“It’s quite ironic how the Democrats falsely claimed President Trump of associating with a sex offender, only for the Trump DOJ to unveil Epstein files that depict Bill Clinton skinny dipping with a pedophile,” stated conservative activist Laura Loomer.

“Recently released documents reveal Bill Clinton without a shirt in a jacuzzi with a woman that is other than his wife Hillary Clinton,” posted attorney Rogan O’Handley. “There’s only one explanation Epstein would photograph a Commander-in-Chief with a girl in a hot tub: Blackmail.”

Former President Campaign Issues Statement

Clinton has repeatedly stated he was aware of no illegal actions by Epstein and has never been alleged to have engaged in any wrongdoing. “The administration hasn’t been hiding those files for an extended period only to dump them at the last minute on a Friday to protect Bill Clinton,” Clinton’s representative Angel Ureña stated in a comment.

“The release is about protecting themselves from what comes next, or from information they will try and conceal permanently. So they can release as many low-quality 20-plus-year-old photographs as they want, but it isn’t about Bill Clinton. Never has, not ever be,” the statement added.

Broader Rightwing Comment Seems Muted

Nonetheless, broader comment on the right was relatively muted following the disclosure, particularly when compared with the loud calls for action that preceded the congressional approval to pass a bill requiring the files' publication.

Loomer, who recently accepted media access at the Defense Department, had been one of the most vocal proponents for a full release. In February, she criticized the administration generally and Bondi in particular after a set of rightwing personalities were provided physical folders of materials that contained no new information.
